celebrating home craftsmanship

Quality and Craftsmanship at Home

Quality and craftsmanship are the essence of every Lowell custom-built home.  These two elements not only enhance the value of your property but ensure long-term satisfaction that will be appreciated for generations.

First Impressions

First Impressions

The moment you cross the threshold, you’ll feel a sense of calm and quiet in a well-crafted home.  The walls, windows and doors unite to encase you in a peaceful escape from the world.  This is a sign of superior materials and quality construction.

Intentional Elements

Intentional elements compose a home's craftsmanship and quality

A custom home is more than just a structure; it’s a harmonious blend of design and environment. The intentional placement and high-quality materials within the architectural flow create a natural sense of ease and belonging.

Memorable Details

memorable details in a home to showcase craftsmanshipThe exquisite craftsmanship in a custom home is never accidental. Our design process emphasizes the flow and rhythm of each space in order to create moments to pause and appreciate the artistry. Natural wood paneling, beamed ceilings, and book-matched stone fireplaces all require the skill of our talented craftsmen before the final story of home is complete.

Immersed in Quality and Craftsmanship

Immersed in quality and craftsmanshipFrom the grandest space to the smallest niche, every Lowell home is a masterpiece of quality and craftsmanship. Each detail is carefully deliberated.  In this home arched doorways direct passage through the home, knotty wide plank flooring seamlessly connects spaces while generously detailed woodwork adds to the rich and immersive experience.

Enduring Value

The Character of a Home

In any community a property with character stands out.  Picturesque Geneva Lake is the location of the latest home to join the iconic collection of Lowell Custom Homes. The distinctive design radiates character and charm.  In the first of a series of articles we are sharing this inspirational home and its eloquent style.  Starting with an overview, future articles will be devoted to the finely tuned details that make it a masterpiece.

Lowell Custom Homes collaborated with homeowners and designers at North Shore Nest to strike the perfect balance for lake home living.  The timeless coastal architecture is accentuated with impeccable design revealed in the photography of Aimée Mazzenga

Beginning with first impressions, this home promises relaxed luxury within.  Quality construction and authentic materials establish a foundation for the craftsmanship Lowell Custom Homes is known for.  Scott Lowell and his team explain it best here.

The character of a home is much more than the sum of its parts.  Each home is about feelings and emotional comfort.  It is about the right design in the right setting.  Architectural design should be unified with the natural environment and surrounding community.  Here the harmony begins at the point of entry as it eases from exterior to interior experience.  Detailed woodworking, feature ceilings and the spacious flow of rooms all contribute to a light and airy feel for the home.

Our response to a home is generated by how involved we become as we move through the space.  Shapes, lighting and color palette are all part of the character.  Here a sense of calm and order is expressed through the perfect symmetry of furnishings within the receptive living room space.

The living room merges seamlessly to a kitchen which features Das Holz Haus cabinetry from Geneva Cabinet Company. This truly is the heart of the home with beamed ceilings, custom range hood and an inviting island for meal prep and gatherings.  The custom cabinetry is furniture quality and offers abundant floor to ceiling storage with true divided mullioned glass.

The bright, uplifting feel is carried into the versatile dining area which serves throughout the day as an ideal place to feast and linger.  Friends and family can gather and set the mood from casual to formal while taking in the tranquil view of Geneva Lake.

Just beyond the main living space a change of pace is offered by an intimate study with wooded views.

Flooded with natural light, the bedroom suite is designed to start each day fully refreshed.

We leave you with this little teaser for the next article where we promise to feature the outdoor living spaces for this home.

Designing the Perfect Entry

A little effort goes a long way when creating a beautiful first impression.  We like to start with curb appeal and carry it on through the entry of your home.  The entry is often passed over with design efforts jumping right into living spaces.  But keep in mind that the entry is highly visible. It is the perfect spot to create a memorable moment for you and your visitors.

Start with the Door

The character of your entry door carries from the exterior to the interior of your home.  It must coordinate with both points of view, so choose wisely.  It should be architecturally compatible with your home design and provide the security and insulation appropriate for your location.

Light the Way

Illuminate this space with options that allow versatility.  A stunning chandelier is always appropriate, then consider adding sconces and even tabletop lighting to allow you to adjust the levels of light according to your needs and mood.

Define with Area Rugs

Add warmth with the texture of area rugs and runners.  They will define the entry and move people in the right direction down the hall.

Include a Statement Piece

One piece can set the stage for the entire home by introducing the style and mood of your rooms.  Keep the entry open and unfussy but don’t be afraid to use a substantial furniture piece when space allows.  A mirror is always nice for allowing last minute touch ups when coming or going.

Provide Seating

This is a small courtesy for guests, especially in the midwest where visitors often come weighed down with boots, coats or umbrellas.  It can be a chair, bench or even a small settee.  All that is required is a place to rest a person or package once entering your home.

Share A Bit of Yourself

Make it your own by including bits and pieces of your favorite things.  This is a peek into your personality with favorite collections, art or decor.

Ample Storage

The need for entry storage is a given, and the standard closet provides nicely.  Also consider solutions to expand storage with built-ins or furniture that provides storage drawers.

Don’t Forget Secondary Points of Entry

Don’t neglect the more common entry that you and your family use on a daily basis.  It should be just as appealing as the guest entry, and even more functional with storage for coats, shoes and packages.

Holiday Entertaining to Suit Your Mood

Stop googling party ideas and start enjoying the holidays.   Plan a gathering that perfectly suits your mood, your resources and your level of holiday energy.  Low stress is the key.  Your friends and family will love you just for hosting any type of get-together.   Keep in mind, the most successful events will  take advantage of the special features in your home.

Start by making a list of every idea and recipe you’ve every wanted to try, then grab a cup of coffee and scratch off most of the ideas.  Save just a few items that will show your guests that you think they are special.  We have three entertainment modes for you to consider.  Match one up to your holiday mood and let the party flow naturally!

Cozy & Casual

This is a no-spanx-allowed fuzzy sweater gathering around your inviting fireplace.

Pairs well with . . .

Spiked Hot Cocoa and Charcuterie

Cocktails and Conversation

Your open floor plan lets everyone mingle as conversations flow around the unique touches you collected, like this floating magnetic cocktail table.

Pairs well with . . .

Mistletoe Margaritas and Cranberry Tarts

Dining and Delicacies

The ambiance of your formal dining area enchants guests for the ultimate dinner party experience.

Pairs well with . . .

Cranberry Champagne Mimosas and your finest china

In any mode, plan and prepare in advance as much as possible.  There are a surprising number of make-ahead recipes that look like you’ve been grinding away all day.  Then just choose one or two simple holiday decor ideas and your guests will feel welcomed.

Home Improvements Lift Your Spirit & Home Value

Of course, home improvements will increase the value of your home, but the lift to your spirit is priceless!

Subtle factors in our environment have a huge impact on the way we feel.  At times the color of the wall, or just the fact that there is a wall, can dump us into a bad mood.  Studies have shown that our feel-good endorphins increase when we are attracted to our environment.  So get the positive feelings flowing with some home improvements!

Start with a review of our article Should You Remodel to see if it makes sense to update your current home.  Then browse through these popular and often cost effective ideas.

Remove a Wall – Expand Your Space

Open floor plans are at the top of everyone’s wish list because they create a natural flow between key living spaces.   Reworking the existing floorplan can provide an unrestricted social feel.    In this case the kitchen was expanded by removing a wall to allow the homeowners a seamless connection between the kitchen and living room.  The new space feels enormous without the old confining kitchen enclosure.  Of course, you should seek the opinion of an expert before making any structural changes. For a few guidelines click here.

Updating Cabinetry & Countertops

Nothing dates a home more than a dingy and cramped kitchen.  This fresh new layout designed by Geneva Cabinet Company, LLC. provides more efficient storage and open circulation.  New cabinetry is  by Shiloh with countertops by Cambria.  A lovely stone backsplash from Bella Tile and Stone and artisan hardware complete the look with an air of sophistication for this newly efficient floorplan.

Improve Lighting

Finish off every room with proper lighting.  It will instantly update and brighten the space.  Think in terms of a balanced blend of light sources.  Chandeliers are perfect for general lighting.  Add dimmers to alter the mood.  Supplement with recessed cans to focus on architectural features such as this fireplace wall.  They also serve well as task lighting when strategically spaced in the kitchen.  Note the additional sparkle added by crystals and the mirror!

Don’t forget the Bath

Baths can add an instant update, and one that is attractive will certainly improve your mood.  It’s much nicer to start and end each day in a fresh bright space with beautiful lighting and good storage.   Consider the various options for the redesign of your bath by reading this.

Here is a quick review of this latest project.  Let it inspire you and call us to discuss future updates to your home.
